Usually, additional fire protection is not required in our drive-in car parks (open overground multi-storey car parks according to German building regulations). A third of the external wall surface is always open, so hot smoke can evaporate quickly and is automatically replaced by fresh, cool air. This means that, in the case of a fire, the air temperature will not rise excessively and the critical steel temperature will not be reached.
Fire behaviour tests in multi-storey car parks proved that, even in the worst case, fire spreads only to the next car. Apart from that, the rise in temperature in the area surrounding the fire was not enough to reduce the carrying capacity of the steel construction. This is due to the fact that modern cars do not contain much inflammable material except petrol, tyres and seat fabrics.

Concrete Cover Construction Method for Compact Architecture
|
In contrast to open multi-storey car parks, the framework of closed multi-storey car parks has to be protected against fires.
Concrete cover composite supports as fire protection in a deep basement
This also applies to open car park levels under ground level which cannot be aerated sufficiently (1/3 of the external wall surface). These levels could be build in concrete cover construction method.
